To The Cloud! Longs Peak – Loft Route

09 Sep

9.8.2011 My mom and I went to the top of Longs Peak via the Loft Route.

We stopped for breakfast at Chasm Lake and that was the last time we could SEE the summit.

At the top of Lamb’s Slide just before the Exit Ramp to the Loft the clouds soared up towards us and engulfed everything above 1,300′. From that moment on we were climbing in the clouds. It was until we got back down to Chasm Lake that we were able to see more than 20 feet in front of us. While in the cloud it snowed for short periods of time. There is a solid snow field at the top of the Lamb’s Slide that is mostly avoidable to the left, however the rocks were slightly wet and icy in spots.

The Loft itself had patches of snow which was actually helpful on the return trip. Without much visibility we were able to retrace our steps like they were bread crumbs.

No view from the top but it was a very cool experience. Back at Chasm Lake we took a look behind us and I could not believe we were up there just hours earlier. It was a wonderful trip.

4th of July 14ers – Bel and Ox

13 Jul

Belated post but we did our traditional 14er climb this 4th of July.

We hit the summit of Mt Belford at 8:30am on 07.04.11 and had the peak to ourselves. The climb was steep but the trail was in very good condition and no snow.

The ridge “walk” over to Mt Oxford was a little tricky as it is a pretty steep and rocky down climb from the Belford summit. Again, not very technical but the trail down was loose rock and some snow. It’s about 1.5 miles hick from peak to peak and then you must back track to Belford.

Resummiting Belford was a bit exhausting but from there it is all down hill.

A quick trip to Chasm Lake

16 Feb

With the day off, Joe and I took on the wind and snow to visit Chasm Lake.

It was windy but sunny and clear skies. We even saw a few Ptarmigan on our way up.

Backpacking Meals – Nutritional Value

03 Feb

When picking backpacking meals for an extended trip my main goal was to find a meal that wouldn’t leave me with an upset stomach.

I now know which Mountain House and Backpacker’s Pantry meals sit well with me. I can now narrow it down to the meal that provides me with the most nutritional value. These two brands are widely available and have very detalied nutrional values posted online.
