Crestone Needle 08.2010

19 Aug

Matt Lee and I climbed Crestone Needle last Sunday. I know why everyone we passed that day agreed that this was their favorite 14er to date. The only appropriate way to describe these two 14ers is as The Mighty Crestones! Crestone Needle is 14,197′ (19th tallest) and Crestone Peak is 14,294′ (7th tallest).

When you reach the lower South Colony lake you believe you will see those Mighty Crestones! Like last weekend when we climbed Quandary, we were treated to fog first thing in the a.m. When we reached the first lake we didn’t know which peak we would be climbing. And then like Lamont Cranston, we saw the Needle break through the clouds. There was no question.

This is the funnest 14er I’ve done. It has just the right amount of technicality and exposure. The lakes are visible throughout the hike. When you reach the summit you immediately notice it isn’t very roomy, hopefully you have it to yourself like I did.

Exchange 2003 – purge greyed out

11 Aug

If you have recently deleted an AD user account and ‘marked mailbox for deletion’ and want to immediately purge that mailbox you will find out that the option is greyed out. This is because there is a 30 day retention period in which exchange has marked the mailbox for deletion but has not actually removed it.

To force a purge:
1. Open Exchange System Manager
2. Browse to Administrative Group > First Administrative Group > Servers > yourserver > First Storage Group > Mailbox Store (yourserver) > Mailboxes.
3. Right click on Mailboxes in the left window pane and choose “Run Cleanup Agent”
4. Over in the right window pane you will see a red X over the mailbox you want to purge.
5. You can now right click on the mailbox and choose purge (or reconnect).

Quandary Peak August 2010

11 Aug

My wife, Brenda, and I climbed Quandary Peak last Sunday. I told her that there were a few spots that required light climbing and not looking down. :)

The Saturday night before hand we drove a few miles past the trail head turn off to the top of Hosier pass. There is a dirt road at the top that goes by several very nice camp sites, continue up the road to tree line where there is a semi hidden camp site right off the road.

We made dinner and prepared our breakfast for the next day. At about 9pm we crawled into the tent and it began to rain heavy. Sometime around midnight we both woke up to mad thunder and lightning. This continued for a few hours. The next morning everything was wet and we were surrounded by clouds.

It seemed a stretch that we would be able to take the West ridge to summit Quandary in this weather. Regardless, we started hiking along the basin, working our way to the saddle.. the beginning of the West ridge. We could see climbers waiting on the saddle as clouds constantly rolled around them. By the time we reached them they started hiking away from the West ridge towards a 13er.

The weather had settled, it was 11am and we decided that the rocks were dry enough that we could make it to the summit by noon. There are 3 major obstacles along this route complicate the final mile to the summit. Navigation and line choice is crucial. Bring along a route description with pictures that show the right direction to go. This hour long mile could easily turn into 2 or more hours if you don’t pick the right route the first time.

We hit the summit at 11:55am where we were greeted by folks who took the East ridge. Definitely a more satisfy summit when approaching from the west.

ServersCheck: RPC server is unavailable – 2008 server

10 Aug

ServersCheck is a great IT admin tool. It can monitor server connectivity, windows health, process and service status, and the list goes on. I’ve setup monitors for a number of Windows 2008 and 2008 R2 servers and each time I setup the first monitor I get the error “The RPC server is unavailable”. I’ve played around with the firewall settings on the server I intend to monitor enough times that it is time to post the exact rule you need to enable to allow ServersCheck to do its thing.

Problem: Monitoring a 2008 or 2008 R2 process or service: The RPC server is unavailable

Resolution: Windows 2008 or 2008 R2 firewall
1. On the 2008 or 2008 R2 server you intend to monitor open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
2. Select inbound rules on the left and scroll down to Remote Administration (RPC) on the right.
3. Double click the rule and check the box “Enable”. Apply and close.

4. Back to ServersCheck, test your monitor again.
